American
Traditional
Heavy lines, saturated colour and motifs that have worked for a hundred years. Eagles, roses, panthers, daggers, anchors, swallows and pin-ups. The second style I give my full attention to.
American traditional came out of the ports and the armed forces — places where a tattoo had to read from across the street and survive years of sun and salt water. Those conditions are exactly what made it the style that ages best of all.
Why bold will hold
The rule is simple: a heavy line and solid colour survive; fine detail spreads. Skin is not paper — over decades the ink migrates a little. A tattoo built on thin lines and soft gradients turns into a grey smudge after fifteen years. Traditional work with a proper outline still reads.
So do not come to traditional looking for photorealistic shading. Come for a clear shape, a silhouette you can name at a glance, and colour that holds.
The classic motifs
- Eagle — freedom and strength. The oldest American motif there is.
- Panther — courage and aggression. A classic for the forearm and the chest.
- Rose — love, and also impermanence. The most versatile motif of the lot; it fits anywhere.
- Dagger — betrayal or bravery, depending on what it is going through.
- Swallow — a sailor's motif. It originally marked five thousand nautical miles and the journey home.
- Anchor — stability, a fixed point. Often with a name or a banner.
- Pin-up — a classic from the service years, these days more a nod to the style than a statement.
- Heart and banner — room for a name. The oldest form of the “tattoo that means something”.
The palette
The traditional palette is deliberately narrow: black, red, yellow, green, and later blue. That is not a limitation but a decision — a small number of saturated colours holds the piece together and keeps it legible.
Black and grey traditional is an equally valid route. It reads quieter and is more reliable on darker skin.
Size and placement
Unlike Japanese work, traditional is built around standalone motifs. You do not have to plan a whole sleeve — one well-placed panther on the forearm works on its own. Larger areas are then assembled from several motifs with space between them.
The typical size is 10 to 20 cm. Below about 8 cm it gets hard to keep a heavy line, and the motif loses the thing that made it traditional in the first place.
Price
A smaller flash piece up to 10 cm comes to 80 – 200 €, the classic 10 to 20 cm size to 200 – 500 €. More in the price list.
